STRESS - What the Bible says about Stress??

Definition :-
Pressure by situation/circumstances in life and the mental/emotional reactions to such pressures.
It is the way a body reacts to an actual or perceived danger.

Why and when do we have stress???

  • Due to multitasking – too many responsibilities to handle
  • Physically tired
  • Sick
  • Want to show our independence – we take too much tasks than we can handle
  • Move our eyes away from the LORD like Peter
  • Due to guilt feeling over our sins
  • Sometimes it comes even without any reason

Stress has 2 parts to it.
Circumstance (Cause)
– Every stress starts with this – This may or may not be in our hands.
Reaction (Effect) – How we respond to stress/ How we handle it.

Possible reactions to stress
1. Negative Reaction – This is the reaction of most human beings. It includes getting angry and brittle, full of doubt and unbelief, grumbling and crying, blaming the situations, self-pity, falling sick or even commit suicide.
Eg :- Sauls reaction- 1 Sam 18 :6-11
2. Neutral Reaction Hiker reaction - continue carrying the stress like a burden - become part of burden
3. Positive Reaction- Submit to God - full of faith in God
What the Bible wants us to do???
that we trust in Him, put Him first, and do the best we can
1. Accept and DO Gods will
- Think of WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) in any situation
eg :- (a) Esther
- Who we are under pressure reveals who we really are.
In Esther 4:6-17, Haman was plotting to destroy the Jews and managed to get the order from the King. Mordecai (Esthers uncle) explained the situation to Esther and asked her to talk to the king. In those days whoever approaches the king without being summoned were put to death. But she decided to do the will of God even under that stressful situation. She fasted and prayed and approached the king. She was determined to do the will of God under any circumstance. Her determination can be seen in her words “If I perish, I perish”
(b) Mary
When the angel of the Lord told her that she would be pregnant out of wedlock, it would definetely have been a stressful situation for her. But she decided to accept the Lord will.
How do we know the will of God??
(a) Romans 12:1-2 says "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--His good, pleasing and perfect will."
(b) Constant meditation on His word. Build your life on the rock of Jesus, and the rock of putting His words into practice. If you do not put to practise, the word of God will be like a dormant seed that fell on the rock. Luke 6:47, 48 says "I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them in to practice. He is like a man building a house who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came the torrents struck that house but could not shake it because it was well built.". Jesus didn't say that once we built our house on the rock everything would be perfect. He said that the flood will come but the house will be firm.

2. GO to God
Mt. 11:28-30 says "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Psalms 55:22 says “ Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall.”
If you cannot solve a problem, it is no longer your problem. Turn it over to God.
Eg :- (a) If your manager or any higher authority is the reason for your stress, there is probably nothing that you can do. In such cases just submit the situation to God.
(b) Daniel – When the king threw him in the lions den, he had nothing that he could do. But he did what the Lord expects all of us to do in such a situation. He submitted himself and his problem to God and prayed fervently.

3. Do not fear. Fear is opposite to faith
- Beleive that God can answer and He will answer.
- Look at the eyes of the problems and do not let the problem dominate over you. This will mean victory for the devil whose main aim is to pose a threat to the beleivers with problems.
Matthew 13:22 says "The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful."
Some verses from the Bible to motivate us and encourage us to be fruitful :
-Romans 8:31 "If God is for us, who can be against us?" .
-John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
-1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love but perfect love drives out fear, for fear has a torment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

4. Solitary time with God
At times of trouble, stop thinking about the circumstances and have a time of fellowship with God. This will renew your strength. The Bible says “Be still and know that I am God”
eg : - Jesus – was often in stressful situations but was never stressed out.

5.Praise
eg :Paul and Silas (Acts 16:22-40)
When they were put in the dark prison, instead of being stressed out with fear, they started praising and singing.
- count your blessings
Psalms 103 :1 says “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits”
- the joy of the Lord is our strength.

6. Take one day at a time.
Finally I want to conclude by saying 'If God is the reason behind your success and life, you wont be stressed out'. Even a violin wouldnt produce music without some strain.

"I will give you rest"

Matthew 11:28 says "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest"
This is one of the verses in the Bible which really caught my attention. The Holy Spirit really spoke to me through the verse. I would like to share some of the revelations with my blog friends. I would like to divide the verse into 3 parts - "Come to me" "all who are weary and heavy-laden" and "I will give you rest". I just want to shar my thoughts on the 3rd part "I will give you rest"

What is "Rest"???

The dictionary defines "rest" as 'A state of quiet or repose' or 'freedom from everything which wearies or disturbs', ' peace'.....
It is a state of peace or freedom from a disturbing or weary situation.
I saw a sticker with the picture of a mother kangaroo with the baby in her pouch and the words "I will give you rest" written below. I also saw another sticker with a tree. One of the branches of the tree was drooping and would break off any moment. Just below that branch is a lake. On the branch....... a birds nest with 3 little ones..... The same verse "I will give you rest" was written below...... These stickers really spoke to me....
In the first case, the kangaroo is definetely in the midst of enemies and trouble. But the baby kangaroo in the pouch does not have to worry about anything. It is safe and at peace with his mom. That is the kind of rest Jesus wants to give us. He wants to be a source of peace amidst the trails and tribulations of this world.

Jehovah Jirah - my provider

Gods way of providing our needs is beyond our understanding. He uses unusual people, unusual circumstances and unusual ways to get his work done. We often make our prayer expecting God to answer our prayer in a particular way. Sometimes we are even shocked to see that things are not working in the way we expected. But ultimately we often do realise that God has answered our preyers but just in a different way.

I would like to explain this with an example said by a man of God in our church. It is the example of how God provides Elijah in I Kings 17. God asks Elijah to leave Israel after he spoke famine over the land of Samaria. We see in II Kings 17 : 4 God says "I have ordered the ravens to feed you". Wow!!!! What an unconventional way of providing food. Will anyone expect such a way of provision when he prays for food??? Similarly in II Kings 17:9 God says "I have commanded a widow to supply you with food". If we read further in that chapter we see in II Kings 17:12 that the widow had just a handful of flour and a little oil. She was planning to make a last meal for her and her son before commiting suicide. We see again that it is an unusual way of provision through a widow. The surprising part of the story is that widow dint have food for herself too. Will anyone in our least of dreams expect God to provide through a person who doesnt have anything????

God has His own ways and it is beyond our understanding. It is our duty to submit ourselves to His will and He will lead us and provide for us. Our God is a God who can make things out of nothing as He created the world. He created man out of dust. There is a saying that someone said

God makes things out of nothing........

As long as man becomes nothing before God.......

He can make something out of him.

Tornado

The term 'Tornado' must be new to many as it was for me until few months back. Recently we moved to nebraska which is supposed to be in the tornado belt.
A warning is usually given 10-15 minutes before the tornado attack. The first time i heard the siren go, i just peeped outside to take a look. The sight that i saw is unforgettable. Though the tornado was 8-10 miles away from our place, i could see the effect. The sky was totally dark(black) and i mean it 'totally'.
The actual tornado is like a tube of wind starting from the clouds and its other end reaching the ground. The wind is sure to affect everything in its surrounding.
During the recent tornado attact in our place, so many houses were destroyed. We had to rush to the basement storm shelter to be safe. Many trees fell on houses and people lost their houses. The roofs were blown away.
The day after the tornado, interview was taken of all the tornado affected people. One lady who had lost her house in the tornado was bold enough to praise God for saving her life. The guts of the lady really touched me. Is it possible for us to praise God in difficult times???? Praising God during happy times is easier. But what about times when everythings go wrong???
i want to encourage each one to praise God for everything...

Computers and anti-virus software

Many of us have computers or laptops that we use for business and entertainment. We install strong anti-virus software to curb viruses entering into our computer. If anti-virus is not installed, any sort of virus can attack our computer and will collapse our operating system. We may have to lose data and our precious works. How preciously we are protecting our computer from external evils so that we can work without any interruption.

I just want to compare this with our life. Our life is like a computer and Jesus is our anti-virus software. He will protect us from all sorts of viruses i.e. evil, wickedness, sin etc. As we scan our computer for any infected files so as to fix it, we also need to scan our heart, mind and soul with the word of God. In Psalms 139:23, 24….the Psalmist says “Search me, o God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. In Jer 17: verse 9 says ‘The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure Who can understand it?

When we scan our life with the word, surely we can avoid from folly, compromising the world and from sin. Jesus is our anti-virus software who will give us a pure conscience, who will protect us from falling and who will bless us to lead a Holy life

A song in the night....

When going through life’s toughest situation

Lord, I feel afraid to keep one step ahead

All my hopes seems to be lost

I feel darkness covered over me

All my passion, desires and dreams

Are almost come to an end

In all these, I can remember your promises

The plans to give me hope and a future

My destiny is in your hands

Oh! the life you have promised for me is great

Will you not give it to me at this moment?

It’s a life or death situation……

Will it not be a life providing state for me?

Will it not be a “life giving position from you?

Lord, I want to live to proclaim your glory

The strength of your righteous hand is awesome

You have delivered me from death

And made me to stand on the rock

Glory! Glory!Glory! Glory to your name

“I will wait for my renewal to come”

“I will wait for my renewal to come” Yea, it was the words which Job spoke in Bible (Job 14:14)….when he was going through severe pain, torment, anguish in which words cannot express how much trouble he went through…..He was not understood by his own wife and friends. Job was left alone with no one to comfort. How much it would be frustrating and dismaying situation in his life?

The word “wait” is sometimes very difficult to accept especially when we expect an immediate deliverance or blessing. But sometimes we face situation where we need to wait patiently unto Jesus. While waiting Satan can bring the following attitude and feeling …….

Negative ness
Anger towards God
Stress

The first one “Negative thoughts” will bring fear which leads to bondage…….the second one “Anger towards God will lead to separation of our loving relationship with Jesus which can be a major cause for missing God’s blessing and will. The third one “Stress” if not treated will end in depression. Depression is the number one cause for suicide. Bondage, separation and depression are not the plans of God in your life.

We must not allow the above tools of destruction into our lives. Let us guard our life into Jesus Christ. Like Job, let us wait for our renewal to come which will fetch us “Double blessing” and on that day….there will be shouts of praise and joy in your life…..Amen

My cat named "Jala"

I had a pussy cat named “Jala”. I use to show her lots of love and I cared for her so much, gave food for her………but though I showed kindness and love, my cat use to go to my neighbors house and use to be there for a long time. One day it really hurt me when I was searching for her and found her sleeping very quietly in my neighbor’s house. I felt very sad in my heart and thought why my cat is not able to be with me even though I showed bags of love and affection towards her?

The same incident I could relate with Jesus. How sad JESUS will feel when we go out of His loving hands…….when we stray with our worldly ways. How big are the love, care and affection of Jesus towards us? How much His Hand is protecting us? We often fail to realize His Eternal love towards us………the love on the cross of Calvary which gave us hope, joy, peace and above all the greatest gift “Salvation”. Shall we take a decision today not to grieve our Eternal Father? Shall we also give Jesus the love in the same way He shows to us?

Greatest Miracle - Creation

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" Jeremiah 1:5

I've come across this verse hundreds of times. I al thought I understood the verse pretty well. God knew us before we were even formed.
Today I received the bad news of one of my close friend who had miscarried. All of a sudden I realise what a great miracle "creation" is. It is something that man has not been able to duplicate. Not only duplicating, no man can have the slightest control over the process of "creation". Doctors can tell the sex of the baby, determine the heart beat, check the growth etc etc. But no one can control "creation". The development of each and every body part is not in any of our hands.
I was just shaken by these thoughts this day. What I have today to be called by the name "Dahlia" is not due to my efforts or my acheivement. It is purely Gods gracious miracle. I take this time to thank God for the good hands, eyes, nose, ears, legs, heart and everything that He has given me.

How much Patient God must be...

I love this song

"He is still working on me
To make me what I want to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and the stars
sun and the earth and jupiter and mars
How loving and patient he must be He is still working on me
..........
.........
And I will be perfect according to his plan
Fashioned by the masters loving hand
......
He loves me as I am
Remember He is the potter and I am the clay"

In our earthly lives we can become impatient in a second but its hard to keep our selfs to be patient.
I have been Gifted with a son on 13th September 2006 and we have named him Kevin Daniel. He is now 16 months old.The word Patient is more I learnt after his birth. My son will be taking and dropping things ,climbing everywhere ,tearing papers which are not supposed to be handled by him .
Immediately I will say to him "No.... No .... Kevin you should not do that".
But he will do after I have said to him.Everytime when I say ' No ' I expected from him not to do it and to obey my words.
So I will ask why did u do that.
Everytime when I tense up and get angered God remained me of this song verse
"How loving and patient he must be.. He is still working on me"

In the same way
How God says ' NO to many things in our daily Life'
Are we obeying him immediately or doing the things and getting forgiveness from God.
Everytime when we disobey or dont please him. He is not angered like earthly parents.

He is our Heavenly Father and who loves us so much.He is more patient towards us to shape us everyday according to His will and ways.

How Patient God must be for all our activities which may not please him, which may not be the way what he wanted to us to do, sinful thoughts , impatience and so on..

The love and patience God has for us we cant imagine .

He is still working on us to make us what we have to be...

The deepest part...........

“The deepest part of me is where I hide my dreams
The deepest part of me is given into HIS hands
And I know that you’re always beyond that I dream
You live inside the deepest part me”

Above is the chorus of a song which has touched me sometime back. I realized how valuable the “deepest part of me” where aspirations, dreams and passion rise up which sometimes can lead to a wrong turn In life if the above package is not in accordance with God’s will.

It is good that we may give our “deepest part” to Jesus Hands so that He can design our lives. Yea, but it is not going to be easy as human tendency is to trust his/her might. It takes believing the unchanging God and taking the word into your life. In Proverbs Chapter 3 verse 5 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”

What will happen if you lean on your own understanding? You will face only frustration and failure. Remember friend, for God’s thoughts are not your thoughts and your ways are not His ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Is 55:8, 9)

Just give your deepest thoughts, failures, hurts, frustration into Jesus Hands and you will see the Maker’s hands designing you for a blessed purpose. His higher thoughts and ways on you will fill your life with joy and happiness- if you submit to Jesus completely the ‘inmost being or deepest part’………………

Open Door, Closed doors....

"God shuts every door to open the best door for you"

These were the words that comforted me one fine day in 2002. I had just finished my B.E and was in the middle of a roadway not knowing where the road is going. During my final year my only ambition was to get into a job as soon as possible. But my parents insisted on me doing my post graduation. Amidst all the misunderstanding, I never bothered to prepare for my M.E admissions. I missed out the GATE exams and even the Anna University non GATE exams. I was so careless that i dint even send an application to Anna University. So the biggest of doors were shut for me. It was only after I finished my B.E that I realised that I was nowhere....
The only options I had was to try and get into some private colleges. But the donations those days for M.E Computer Science was crazy. The minimum donation would be 75000 which was much beyond what my parents could afford. So i could see the next door closing too.
In my vision there was no possibilty of getting my M.E admission that year. During those days of mental battle, I got a forwarded mail from a friend. I hardly remember the contents of the mail. But the line ' God shuts every door to open the best door for you' just struck me. It was there in the back of my mind for the next few days. Not long after, I saw a paper advertisement from Karunya Institute of Technology for M.E admissions. I put an application without much hope. But to my surprise I got the admission. The best part, I dint have to pay a penny as donation. It was indeed the best door that God had opened for me.
So friends, I want to encourage everyone with the wors of God given to the Philedelphia church in Rev. 3:7, 8. It says "What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open". Indeed my dear friends, all doors may seem to be closed but our God will open the best door for you. When he opens a door, no one can shut it....

Positive answers from God

We: "It is not possible"
God: "What is impossible with men is possible with God".(Luke 18:27)

We: "I am too tired"
God: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28-30)

We: "Nobody loves me"

You are diamond that shines in HIS Hands........

“Diamond” has to undergo a deep sharpening and once it is mended, sharpened and designed, it will be in full shape and shining with beauty.

Dear friend, are you feeling that God’s hand is sharpening your life? Are you undergoing the pruning and chipping process of the God Almighty?

Yea, it is painful indeed but thank God that He sharpens and prunes you for a special purpose to be used in HIS perfect Hands……..He has not chosen X and Y but YOU…

It could be a deep fall in your spiritual life….it could be a long waiting period for a blessing…it could be a humble situation that God has allowed in your life…In always remember that Jesus needs you and He is beside you. He will lift you up if you allow yourself for the pruning process. He will remove all the unnecessary burden, hurts, guilt that you are carrying……Psalm 9:18 says “But the needy will not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish”.

Jesus is so thoughtful of your needs, concerns, burden, passion, aspirations and future…One thing you have to do my friend, you have to turn to HIM in whatever situation that you have kept in. Don’t go depressed or keep your heart stubborn for it will increase your sorrow. Come to HIS unfolding hands of love for joy, peace and love will become yours.

Be blessed!

'Chikungunea' - under His control..........

When i was pregnant with my daughter ivana in aug 2006, everyone was talking about being careful about my health, eating well etc. I've always been a sick person from my younger days which made everyone even more worried. I was in chennai at that time. Chennai was full of 'chikungunea' at that time. Every family had atleast one person with this disease. The infected person suffers from severe body pain especially in the joints with high fever. The joint pain would last for 3 month. Chikungunea was mainly transmitted by mosquitoes. So everyone asked me to be extra careful about mosquito bite. I had the 'mosquito repeller' at home, a 'mosquito hunter' in my hand all the time. But somehow mosquitoes used to bite me.
It was around that time, my friend Abi came to visit me and spent a day with me. By afternoon, she said she had severe joint pain and was feeling very feverish. In the evening we went to the doctor and found that she had chikungunea too. She was so worried that i shouldn't get it from her. So she decided to leave immediately.
Just a week before i was about to go to my parents place for delivery, my mom found that she had chikungunea too. With chikungunea in my own house where else could i go??? God was the only hope. I used to read Psalms 91 whenever i felt down and that would be a great source of encouragement.
Amazingly, I was hail and healthy throughout. According to my worldly wisdom I knew that i was surroounded by uncertainity. Any time i could get infected too. But 'there is nothing that is beyond His control. Nothing can happen without His knowledge'...... Thats the simplest way to put it.....
